I will start this review off by saying that I absolutely love comic book movies. If done correctly they can be very fun and some of the most enjoyable films that you can watch. The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb, was one of my most anticipated movies of 2012.
Andrew Garfield was a great choice to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Though he is 29 years old he pulled off being a teenager quite easily. Something which Tobey Maguire couldn’t do in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy, despite being around the same age. Andrew Garfield brings us all of Peter Parker’s traits, from his awkwardness to his smarts. You can tell that he was having a great time making this film. Emma Stone was very good as Gwen Stacy. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone had wonderful chemistry in this movie.
A lot of people didn’t want to see and/or had no interest in The Amazing Spider-Man because it was a remake. They thought it was going to be exactly the same as Raimi’s Trilogy but with a different cast and villain. All those people were dead wrong. The story was very different from the previous Spider-Man movies, which was a very good thing. I thought that this movie was a lot more fun than the previous films. I also appreciated that this film was closer to the comic as I would imagine other Spider-Man fans were. It is simply a better origins story.
I was impressed by the visual effects featured in this movie. Super Heroes have to do incredible feats and without CGI that couldn’t be possible. Spider-Man was able to swing around New York seamlessly. Whenever The Lizard was on-screen he blended with the real environments and the real actors. I can only imagine how good this movie must look in 3-D. The technology keeps on getting better and better, its amazing.
Overall The Amazing Spider-Man is exactly as the title says, amazing. With a great new cast, a different story and spectacular visual effects, it is a successful reboot of the Spider-Man movies. I dare say I enjoyed this movie more than the original films. The sequel is scheduled to be released on May 2, 2014, which I am very excited to see. Not everyone will like this film, but if you enjoy comic book movies or the original Spider-Man films I recommend you to try this one out.
