I’ve always been a huge fan of Marvel Studios and the films which they create. I find myself drawn to even their more mediocre movies. I get this sense of wonder that I have yet to find in any other similar action franchises. ‘The Winter Soldier’ is easily one of Marvel Studios best films yet.
I’ll start off by saying that this film was a huge crowd pleasure. I attended a Friday, opening night showing with my girlfriend and two of my good friends, and the energy in the room could not have been better. The audience was extremely into the film, which was a lot of fun. The laughing in the room was equivalent to a volcano erupting! And once the end credits rolled, the theatre was engulfed in applause and cheering. A small tidbit however, the 3D in the film wasn’t very immersive. Marvel has found the perfect balance between comedy, action and story once again as they did in ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’.
Now I’ll move on to the film itself. What an improvement it was over ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’. I noticed from the get go that unlike his pervious appearances in the Marvel Films, Captain America has actually developed a fighting style, some form of martial arts. It helped this film a lot as without his spectacular shield in ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, I always thought of the character as weak and helpless, two things Captain America should not be thought of as.
The story of the film itself was very well done. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the film, waiting to see what would happen next. The characters present in the movie were pleasantly unexpected and very well done. The great thing about superhero films is that they can do what a lot of other films can’t as they are allowed to feel out of this world, as some people might say. Now the directors of this film did take some liberties because of this, but also stuck the story in the modern age. The story really reflects modern day worries about corruption, which remains to be seen if it will age well in the next few years or not.
Marvel’s really been nailing it with in the casting department. Captain America is played extremely well by Chris Evans, showing how his character is still adjusting to the modern age. The Winter Soldier himself has to be one of my favourite Super Hero villains to date, without saying too much, I’ve always loved characters who have a mysterious air around them. Robert Redford gave a great performance as the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Alexander Pierce. Anthony Mackie’s role in the movie as Falcon was very pleasant, I’ve always liked the guys work in the films that he has been in. As always, it was nice to Nick Furry (Sam Jackson) and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and other members of S.H.I.E.L.D. present in the Marvel Universe. However, HawkEye (Jeremy Renner) wasn’t in ‘The Winter Solider’, however I’m sure that will be explained somehow, possibly in the upcoming Marvel Studio’s film ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.
Overall, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is more than just a good Super Hero film. It’s a great movie in general. The Russo brothers first attempt at a big, hollywood production has been successful and I honestly can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeve for the third entry into the ‘Captain America’ film series. ‘The Winter Soldier’ is without a doubt on par with ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’. If you haven’t seen it already, drop what you are doing and go see it!
